While some Americans are disappointed that we don’t get the new Scirocco, the 2012 Volkswagen Golf R makes a fine consolation prize. Based on the standard Golf platform, the 2012 Volkswagen Golf R vaults past the GTI with more power and all-wheel drive.

For those who feel the sporty VW GTI cannot satisfy their lust for performance, the 2012 Volkswagen Golf R looks to be a suitable remedy. Admittedly, we’re still stinging from the fact that VW’s new Scirocco coupe won’t be available in the U.S., but this new maximum Golf has got our eyebrows raised.
This new most powerful Golf ever continues where the outgoing V6-powered R32 left off. This time, power is delivered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces an impressive 266 horsepower. Buyers will be able to choose between a traditional six-speed manual transmission and VW’s lauded DSG dual-clutch automated manual. Like the R32 predecessor, the 2012 VW Golf R will owe much of its sure-footed handling to standard all-wheel drive. This system has since been reworked, though, for livelier response and the ability to send all power rearward.
In a recent drive in a European-spec model, we found that the new 2012 Volkswagen Golf R is a marked improvement over the last R32, possessing quicker acceleration and sharper handling.
